Three Tips For Organizing Your Walk-In Closet

A walk-in closet is the ultimate storage dream for many people. This type of closet offers a lot of space to hold clothes, shoes, and all your other accessories. If you're not careful, your walk-in closet can become a mess that's hard to navigate. Throwing things in your closet without a sense of order is a disaster waiting to happen. Fortunately, there are organizational techniques that can help. Here are three tips you can use for better walk-in closet organization:

1. Make sure you still want everything in your closet

When you have a lot of storage space, it can be easy to let belongings pile up. There may be items in the back of your closet that you haven't even looked at for years. When you are beginning to organize your walk-in closet, take a moment to make sure you still want everything inside. The best way to do this is by pulling everything out where you can see it. This may initially make your bedroom or hallway more cluttered, but the temporary mess will pay off in the long run. When you can see everything you own, decide what you want to keep, what you can donate, and what you want to throw away.

2. Group items by category

Grouping items by category will help you find things when you need them. The change may be disorienting at first, especially if you're used to looking in a particular place for certain items, but you will soon be glad for the neat organization. Find a place in your closet for shoes, another place for accessories, and another place for items of clothing. You can even sort your clothing by type: place dresses in one area and keep your blouses all together. You may even want to choose a particular spot for seasonal clothing that only gets worn for part of the year.

3. Purchase organizational storage solutions

The right storage solutions can make your organizing efforts much easier and more successful. Buying a standing shoe rack will help you get your shoes off the ground, which will save you floor space. A shelving unit or two can give you a place to store clothing that you would prefer to fold rather than hang. Walk-in closet organization solutions can be beautiful as well as functional. When buying shelves, racks, and other organizational aids, look for items that suit your aesthetic.
